At Affiliated Animal Care, our veterinary internal medicine, surgery, oncology, dermatology, ophthalmology, and emergency/critical care specialists are all board-certified. They have advanced training, extensive knowledge, experience, and expertise in state-of-the-art diagnostic testing and treatment for a vast array of conditions. Plus, our interns, residents, and emergency doctors all work under the supervision of a board-certified specialist.
Critical Care Specialist
Prior to becoming the first board certified critical care specialist in the Hampton Roads area, Dr. Benjamin O’Kelley obtained a BS in Biology from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and earned his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from NC State University. He headed north to complete a one year small animal rotating internship at Tufts University, before completing his three year residency in emergency and critical care medicine at the Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston.
Dr. O’Kelley is proficient at treating a large variety of conditions seen in patients requiring intensive care, but he is particularly intrigued by respiratory diseases, bleeding disorders and life-threatening infections. At Affiliated Animal Care, he leads our mechanical ventilation team, offering our potentially life-saving treatment option for dogs and cats experiencing respiratory failure.
Outside of his duties here at Affiliated Animal Care, he plays an active role in the continued advancement of veterinary critical care medicine by authoring journal articles and book chapters, lecturing at international and local continuing education seminars, acting as a reviewer for the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, and serving on the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care’s Residency Training Committee. Dr. O’Kelley is excited to teach and share veterinary medical skills to our own Affiliated Animal Care staff, benefitting our patient care. In addition, he has trained more than 40 interns over the years, many of whom have gone on to become full time ER doctors or board certified specialists.
When not caring for your animal here at Affiliated Animal Care, Dr. O’Kelley’s favorite thing to do is spend time with his wife and son and their dog Roxy. He is an avid sports fan and enjoys playing basketball and rooting for his favorite sports teams, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Boston Celtics.
Oncologist and Internal Medicine
Dr. Bill Brewer has been with our team for more than 11 years, bringing more than 35 years of veterinary experience to our patients. Dr. Brewer has worked in the private practice, education and research areas of veterinary medicine, specializing in Internal Medicine and Oncology. Dr. Brewer earned his undergraduate and DVM degrees from the University of California, Davis and enjoys working with others and animals to treat unusual cases. In his time away from his patients, Dr. Brewer enjoys gardening, reading, and spending time with his family.
Dr. Paul Berdoulay received his BS in Biology from Southampton College before graduating from Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. He completed a rotating small animal medicine internship with Affiliated Animal Care before doing a three year residency at the University of Florida. He became board certified in small animal internal medicine in 2004 and currently remains an active member of the American College of Small Animal Internal Medicine (ACVIM).
Dr. Berdoulay specializes in both the diagnosis and management of complex medical conditions,including endocrine diseases such as diabetes mellitus and Cushing’s disease, organ dysfunction
such as kidney or liver failure, and autoimmune disorders. He provides treatment for pets requiring hospitalization as well as those being treated on an outpatient basis. He utilizes advanced diagnostic
testing, including ultrasonography, minimally invasive biopsy techniques, specialized blood tests, and videoscopic examination of the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urinary tract.
When he’s not treating patients, Dr. Berdoulay enjoys spending his time with his beloved wife, beautiful daughter, and 4-legged son (a dachshund named Tucker). He also likes to share Sunday dinners and quality time with his mother, father, and brother.
Dr. Tony Puglisi attended James Madison University where he obtained his BS in biology and biochemistry. He received his Master’s Degree in Physiology and his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Georgia. After working in a general veterinary practice in Atlanta, GA, he began specialty training at Texas A&M University, receiving his Master’s Degree in Veterinary Surgery in 1986. After completing 13 years of formal study, Dr. Puglisi returned to the Tidewater, Virginia area starting his own practice and began operation as a veterinary surgical specialist. Dr. Puglisi currently resides in Virginia Beach with his family, where he specializes in orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, soft tissue surgery, joint replacement, wound management and pain management. He has been with our team for 25 years and says that being a veterinary surgeon combines his two favorite things: The “science” of surgery and healing, and being able to work with and help animals. When he’s away from work, Dr. Puglisi enjoys traveling, fishing, diving and sailing.
Dr. Puglisi is a Diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS). To qualify to become an ACVS Diplomat, he had to obtain a degree in veterinary medicine, serve a one-year rotating internship and complete a three-year surgical residency program. Then, to become an ACVS Diplomat, Dr. Puglisi was required to submit extensive credentials documenting their training, clinical competency and scientific contributions to veterinary surgery. As a Diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, Dr. Puglisi is among many other well-respected veterinary professionals whose training, knowledge, and experience set them apart.
Veterinary Surgical Specialist
Dr. Juan Marti brings our team 15 years of experience in veterinary medicine, and is a former clinical instructor and professor for Mississippi State University and Ohio State University. Specializing in small animal surgery with an emphasis on orthopedics, Dr. Marti has studied everywhere from Spain to the UK to Scotland and served his residency at North Carolina State. Dr. Marti enjoys being able to use his skills to help improve the quality of life of pets and, indirectly, the quality of life of their owners. His hobbies and interests include cycling, clay-pigeon shooting, reading and traveling.
Dr. Austin is a native of the state of Maryland. She completed a Bachelor of Science in Biology at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD in 1993. Dr. Austin then taught in Japan as an assistant language teacher for 2 years, and then returned to Maryland and assisted in surgical research at the Uniform Services University of the Health Sciences. She completed her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine with honors, at Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, Virginia in 2002. Upon graduation, she then went to Auburn University to complete both a Small Animal Rotating Internship and then a Small Animal Surgical Residency. She obtained a Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences at Auburn University in 2006. Dr. Austin successfully passed her surgical board examination in February 2007. Following her love of teaching and surgery, she took a position as an Assistant Professor of Small Animal Surgery at Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Austin left academia for private practice in 2011 to be closer to family. It is with great pleasure she now joins Beach Veterinary Surgery and Veterinary Surgical Specialists. While skilled in veterinary surgery, Dr. Austin also has extensive experience in minimally invasive surgery.
Animal Eye Care-Ophthalmologist
Dr. Brad Nadelstein studied at the North Carolina State University of Veterinary Medicine, where he also served his residency in Veterinary and Comparative Ophthalmology. Dr. Nadelstein is a Diplomate for the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists, a mentor for ACVO approved residency for Dr. Heather Brookshire, DVM, and has been published in numerous peer-reviewed publications. He has the experience our pet owners trust, as the ACVO Resident Mentor for Animal Eye Care Associates, Inc. and one of approximately four veterinary ophthalmologists in the USA routinely performing pars plana vitrectomy and retinal reattachment surgery. Dr. Nadelstein’s professional society memberships include the ACVO and ACVO Vitreous Society, as well as the Vision for Animals Foundation, for which he has served as the foundation’s president since 2007. He has been with our team for 15 years, and loves making animals see again and relieving their eye pain. In his time away from work, Dr. Nadelstein enjoys sailing, tennis, fishing, camping and running.
Dr. Robert Walker has been with our team since September 2002 and has experience with speciality hospitals as well as the private practice sector with all companion animals. He holds numerous BS degrees from both NC State and the University of Illionois, including study in the fields of zoology, animal science and veterinary medical science. Dr. Walker earned his DVM at the University of Illinois and holds strong interest in emergency medicine and surgery. Dr. Walker enjoys having the opportunity to help pets and their owners when they are in greatest need, and in his free time likes gaming, playing Flyball and watching movies.
Dr.Thierry Clermont has been with our team for more than two years, specializing in emergency medicine and critical care. Dr. Clermont earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh with a major in Ecology & Evolution, Psychology, along with a minor in Chemistry. He later earned his DVM degree from the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Clermont loves the everyday challenges and case variety that comes with emergency medicine, and in his time away from the office he enjoys playing the cello, ice hockey and brewing his own beer.
Dr. Erica Feiste joined our team in June of 2009, bringing us experience in both general and ER practice. Dr. Feiste takes a special interest in in emergency medicine, soft tissue surgery, anesthesia/analgesia, and reproductive emergencies. Dr. Feiste’s educational background includes earning her BA cum laude from Hollins College in 2003, and her DVM from North Carolina State University in 2007. She became a Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2008, and was named a “Top Vet” by Hampton Roads magazine in 2007 – and Virginia Living magazine repeated that honor in 2011! Dr. Feiste loves working with great people and the excitement of never knowing exactly what will walk through the door. In her time away from work, Dr. Feiste enjoys travel, cooking, needlepoint, spending time at the beach with her Labrador, Haven, and enjoying her four horses.
Dr. Connie Capps started at our Beach location in 2008 and moved to Greenbrier in 2011, bringing our team three years of biochemistry undergraduate work at Virginia Tech and a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. With 20 years of veterinary experience including 15 years of emergency experience, Dr. Capps loves what she does after all these years because each day offers something different. She enjoys medicine, but especially enjoys surgery, and feels there is always something new to be learned. Dr. Capps is also a full-time mom to two awesome kids, Chase and Madison, and a loving wife to her husband Brian. She enjoys being active in her kids’ school and sports teams, going to church, home improvement and photography.
Dr. Howland has been working as an emergency veterinarian with Affiliated Animal Care since 2010. He graduated from Adams State College in 2004 with a degree in cell and molecular biology and a minor in chemistry. Dr. Howland received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from Colorado State University in 2009.
Dr. Howland enjoys all aspects of emergency medicine and is particularly interested in emergency surgery and respiratory diseases. He appreciates his job for the opportunity it provides to be there for people and their pets when they really need someone.
When he is not working, he enjoys bicycling, reading, backpacking and baseball. He shares custody of a cat named Ahab with his parents and also has a ball python named Winnie.
As our Emergency Doctor, Dr. Rafique Achmetov takes a special interest in emergency veterinary care, surgery, anaesthesia and pain management. Dr.Achmetov earned a BS in Animal Science from Virginia Tech and his DVM from Saint George’s University in Grenada, WI. Dr. Achmetov feels that his work with animals benefits those who give us everything and ask nothing in return. In his time off, Dr. Achmetov enjoys skydiving, bungee, cycling and mountain climbing.
Dr. Dunbar Gram has taught dermatology at The University of Edinburgh, The University of Prince Edward Island and North Carolina State University. He received his undergraduate degree from Wesleyan University in Connecticut and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine with high honors from Auburn University. Dr. Gram performed an internship at the University of Illinois and a residency in dermatology at North Carolina State University. He is a board certified dermatologist who created the first private practice based veterinary dermatology residency program on the East Coast. He enjoys research,clinical practice, writing book chapters and journal articles as well as lecturing in North America, Europe and Asia. His passions include his family, pets, fishing, “corrective gardening” aka fixing the yard work done by his pets and educating clients, colleagues and himself. In addition to his patients, two of his own pets have successfully been treated with allergen specific immunotherapy (ASIT).
Dr. Chris Cook is a graduate of Bucknell University. He received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University. He performed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery in Rochester, NY. He completed a residency in small and large animal dermatology at Cornell University where he studied with Dr. Danny Scott and Dr. Bill Miller. Dr. Cook is board certified and joined Animal Allergy & Dermatology in the fall of 2006. His hobbies include his family, pets, cooking and gardening.
Dr. Schmeitzel is a graduate of Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. She completed an internship at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and was boarded by the American College of Veterinary Medicine after completing a dermatology residency at the University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Schmeitzel was an Assistant and Associate Professor of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine for 18 years before joining our group in 2000. Dr. Schmeitzel is a member of American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Academy of Veterinary Dermatology (and past President) and the American College of Veterinary Dermatology. Dr. Schmeitzel has many publications and lectures often.
Dr. Pariser is our Dermatology Resident and preparing to become Board Certified in Veterinary Dermatology. She has worked with Animal Allergy and Dermatology for many years and is a native of Virginia. She received her undergraduate Degree from Radford University and her DVM from Mississippi State University. She chose to attend Mississippi State because of its unique program which allowed her to train with several different respected dermatologists throughout the country. She has completed a one-year rotating internship in Small Animal Medicine and also a one-year internship in Veterinary Dermatology. She shares her home with many cats and her husband, who is also a Veterinarian. Her hobbies include her iPhone, the Outer Banks of North Carolina and her cats.
Dr. David Genovese is our dermatology intern. He received his BS from Washington University in St. Louis and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine where he excelled and received many academic and clinical awards. He completed is rotating internship at the University of Florida. Dr. Genovese is a published author who is an accomplished tennis player and enjoys sharing the responsibilities of being a new parent with his wife who is also a veterinarian. We are indeed fortunate to have Dr. Genovese decide to pursue his passion for veterinary dermatology with us.
